The true heart of the Southern Alsace is not found on any map. It´s a hidden place in which the spirit of innocence, childhood and simple pleasures can be found everywhere. Bees buzzing amongst the cherry trees along the village ramparts, snails and roses thriving in the vineyards, storks standing still like eternal statues in the watery meadows or chatting away in their nests on top of the church roof.Window-boxes full of gorgeous geraniums scent the air of the small roads whilst other flowers like hollyhocks, sunflowers and roses jog for place along the house walls. Cast-iron shop signs depicting children in local costume minding farm animals gently swing in the breeze. And there - in the window of the bakery, is an array of the cake that Little Red Riding Hood took to her grandmother.

The Guglhupf, like the Alsace, is a simple cake, a cake of childhood teatimes in the orchard. It´s baked in a distinctive form which can be bought in many sizes and with an array of glazed decorations from the village of Soufflenheim. It´s few ingredients are readily available and is often part of an Alsatian breakfast table. It proves that food does not have to be made with luxury ingredients to be tasty but it should always be made with an extra large portion of love.
